I want to share with you why I decided to shave my head three weeks ago. First of all, let me begin by telling you I’ve always received compliments on my hair. It actually reminds me of the Seinfeld episode, “Jerry, you have a beautiful head of hair.”
Starting off the year, I told myself that this year is “not about me.” I wanted to put my ego in check and not get caught up believing that I’m special in some way.
Well, I got one comment too many and realized that my hair was actually a crutch for my ego (as strange as that sounds). When I realized it, I shaved it. It was not easy, to say the least. In fact, I wrestled with the conversation in my head for days – that is when I realized it was a bigger deal than I had thought.
My wife still thinks I’m nuts…
I welcome your comments and criticism.

Okay so you are bored. After 45 years of marriage I’ve learned its always wise to listen to your wife. Your L. is pretty but also wise.

Now you know why I haven’t been in!
Gutsy, Phil. I’d never have the courage. But I never thought your ego was out of check in the first place.
Philip,
You’re the BEST! As usual, you’re doing the RIGHT thing for the RIGHT reason.
Love,

Dear Philip,
I Thank you for your insightful emails. I pass them on to friends who are looking for a new carier. Or to get back to their previous ones.

Your hair!
I have a grandson who has a lot of beautiful hair at the age of 4, now seven.
Every woman, yes, woman would compliment him on his hair!
His little ego got so puffed up, one could not imagine. One day his Mom got tired of having to take care of it all the time, and she shave it off. The little fellow got down to earth and behaved like a 4 year young person.
What you have attempted is very admirable. We all need to get in touch with having an ego; and not our ego have us.
What a story to share! Your story that is. Congratulations!
This comment is Sincere,
Maiti
Thanks for your insight.
Kudos to you, Phil, for taking honest notice of your “crutch”, as well as your willingness to confront it through action. I shaved my head in November after completing chemotherapy for breast cancer – it was a bigger deal than I thought it would be and, like everything else in life, it was an amazing opportunity for growth (no pun intended!!). The big news is I am healed and moving forward with my life – things like hair just don’t seem to matter much to me anymore!!
Also, let me say this, it is good for people to get “caught up” in how special they are. We are ALL special – uniquely gifted and called. False humility looks worse on you than a shaved head. Is it possible to embrace your greatness AND keep your ego in check? Of course it is!! IMHO, a heart of service to others is the key.
Blessings to you and your loved ones!!
Thanks for sharing your personal story with us.
Phil – I think it’s a huge deal! Women know this, maybe more than men because hair is such a source of identity for us. When men are lucky enough to keep their hair and have it look great, it’s natural that they consider it part of who they are and how they’re perceived.
Just for the record, I don’t trust men who try to hide the loss of their hair! Be yourself and let it go, fellas!
You still have great hair… even when it is growing out! Oops, I complimented.
Phil,
This is great. I only just met you in person at the TSS reunion, and your personality and enthusiasm made you a beacon of light… you don’t need a gorgeous head of hair.
Gotta hand it to you! I really respect your commitment.

We commend your attempt to take control of the ego…
and we wish you speedy success in this endeavor !!!
Its not what is on the outside that really counts–its what is on the inside—by the way–I think you look fine either way! Funny how we get “caught up” in things that don’t really matter!
I was shocked when I first saw your shaved head…and now I like it…it makes me notice other mens hair and I truly beleive it I was a man I would have a shaved head for the time it takes to have a style…look at the money and time you save, not to mention how handsome you are..looking forward to seeing you on Friday…love mom!
God made a few perfect heads…
The rest he put hair on.
